For mainstream spam control (but not for MERCMAIL!), the more effective it is at keeping spam from you, the more effective it is at doing the same for legitimate email. This is because the filtering and statistical analysis techniques they use cannot really tell if a word or phrase (or whatever they are measuring) is from a legitimate sender or not. As accurate as our competitors' techniques may be, they are ultimately guesses.
